Journey
Oupa John Sefoka, better known as DJ Sumody born in 1984 at Pretoria, South Africa, was a celebrated DJ, producer, and entrepreneur who left a lasting mark on the South African music scene. From a young age, he was drawn to music, immersing himself in the sounds of Kwaito, House, and later Amapiano, which would become central to his career.
He began his professional journey at community radio stations in Tshwane, gaining experience as a presenter and producer. These early opportunities allowed him to develop his sound and cultivate a deep understanding of the local music culture. Over time, Sumbody built a reputation for his energetic performances, keen production skills, and ability to connect with audiences across genres.
Sumbody rose to national prominence through hit tracks such as “Monate Mpolaye” featuring Cassper Nyovest and “Ayepyep”, which became staples on South African radio and online platforms. He released influential compilations including Larger Than House Volumes 1 & 2 and the 2019 album Ashi Nthwela, collaborating with prominent artists like DJ Tira, Busiswa, Kwesta, Zakes Bantwini, Holly Rey, and Londie London.
Beyond music, Sumbody co-founded Ayepyep Lifestyle, a lounge and entertainment brand in Pretoria and Cape Town that became synonymous with nightlife, music, and culture.
Tragically, his life was cut short when he was shot in Johannesburg on 20 November 2022, leaving a profound void in South Africa’s music community. In his honor, the DJ Sumbody Foundation was established to support community initiatives and continue his legacy of creativity, passion, and cultural impact.
Sumbody passed away at 38 years old, but his influence on South African music endures through his recordings, collaborations, and entrepreneurial vision.
